Teaching is an occupation that allows me to learn from my students’ experience. I decided to teach English because it is a practical skill that will always be useful and something I enjoy. .
Engagement is my teaching philosophy. To engage all of my students to ensure they achieve their goals and increase their language abilities. However, just as important is to have fun and keep class interesting..
I believe that teaching should cater to the individual needs of each student while integrating these needs the overall group setting. The teacher should create a fun and relaxed atmosphere where students can feel confident and comfortable in expressing their ideas and opinions, and encourage students to share their views and experiences at every opportunity.
Learning a foreign language is about learning to express yourself through a new medium and having the confidence to communicate effectively without fear of making mistakes. It's the teacher's job to engage students and foster confidence while maintaining a fun and positive learning environment so that each student can achieve their language learning goals.
I tend to favor the student- centered approach to teaching. Encouraging and fostering learning with as much student activity as possible.
Bearing in mind the individual needs of students while keeping them integrated in the group exercise, and having fun while getting the job done.
I believe it is essential to create a learning environment that facilitates as much student participation as possible. I achieve this by being approachable and sensitive to the students' learning needs. In addition, it is necessary to create lesson plans that promote student talk time and allow me to correct students when necessary.
I first became interested in teaching while working a volunteer position tutoring recent Chinese immigrants in Seattle, after successive trips to the mainland. It was this interest that brought me to Taiwan and my first teaching opportunity 11 years ago. Since that time, I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing language and life experience with adult students of all ages and backgrounds. It has been my pleasure, these past years, to work with so many interesting and eager learners who have helped welcome me my home.
I believe a language classroom should be a place where students are encouraged to help themselves promote their own language skills through interactive vocabulary acquisition, contextual grammar focus and, most importantly, a fun, comfortable environment where students will feel at ease. It is my goal to make my classroom a place where every student will gain confidence and expand their skills building off their existing foundation.
